ÖZLEM ERTEKÄ°N "LESS PLASTIC IN DIAGNOSTIC KITS"

The main raw material used in diagnostic kits are called “affinity molecules”, allowing us to distinguish one disease from another. These materials are produced specifically for each disease in the same way that a key is specific to a lock, meaning that a different key is designed for opening each door. The most widely used "key" in the world are molecules called “antibodies”, which are produced by the immune system of animals. In some cases more than half of the cost of a kit can be consisting of antibodies. The “affinity peptides” we are planning to produce will be able to bind the key to the target disease just like antibodies fit the lock, eliminating the use of animal products as well as reducing the use of plastic and reducing costs.
